UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - The #13/13 Penn State Lady Lions (14-4, 5-1 Big Ten) will welcome Minnesota (13-7, 2-4) to the Bryce Jordan Center for a match-up that will be televised nationally on CBS at 1 p.m. In addition to a pre-game National Girls and Women in Sports Day clinic with Penn State women's athletics teams, fans will receive a Maggie Lucas mini-magnetic bobblehead while supplies last.
PROMOTIONS: Sunday is National Girls and Women in Sports Day for the Lady Lions. Participants in the pre-game NGWSD clinic with the Penn State women's athletics steams will receive a free ticket ot the game and opportunity to purchase $5 tickets for their parents. It is also a Subway Full Court 4-Pack game. Fans can get four tickets and one voucher for four 6" subs and four 21 oz. fountain drinks at any of the seven State College Subway locations for just $40.
NGWSD CLINIC: Several Penn State women's athletics teams will hold an All-Sports Clinic on Sunday, Jan. 26 as part of the National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) celebration. The clinic is open to boys and girls that are in eighth grade or younger and will take place on Sunday, Jan. 26 in the IM Building on Curtain Road adjacent to the Bryce Jordan Center. Clinic registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the clinic will begin at 11 a.m. with an autograph session at noon. Clinic attendees will receive a free ticket to the Lady Lion game and the opportunity to purchase $5 tickets for their parents. Fans should park in Lot 44, as they would for the Lady Lion game, and enter the IM Building through the entrance on the South side of the building. Representatives from the women's golf, women's lacrosse, women's ice hockey, field hockey, women's lacrosse and women's volleyball will participate in the clinic. The clinic will feature several stations, so that kids can get a hands-on experience for many different sports, and will conclude with an autograph session.
GIVEAWAY: Fans will receive a Maggie Lucas mini-magnetic bobblehead while supplies last. Fans will get a voucher at the gate to redeem the bobblehead at the redemption locations located in the BJC. This giveaway is the fifth in a series of six giveaways this season; the next giveaway will be a Nittany Lion mini-magnetic bobblehead on Thursday, Feb. 20.
POSTGAME: The entire Lady Lion team will be on the concourse to sign autographs postgame.
KIDS FUN ZONE: The Kids Fun Zone will be on the concourse with an airbrush tattoo artist, caricature artist, face painter and a create-a-sign station.
LIMITED BAG POLICY: Penn State has implemented a limited bag policy at all home athletic events this season. One clear plastic one-gallon plastic bag per person will be permitted for medical needs, child care needs and general items as needed. Items that can fit in a pocket should remain in patrons' pockets (i.e. keys, cell phone, wallet, glasses, camera, sunscreen, lip balm, make-up). General items of this nature, including those that don't fit in patrons' pocket, can also be placed in a clear plastic one-gallon plastic bag. All clear bags will be inspected through the bag and article check stations as in prior years.
TV: The game will air on CBS with Dave Ryan and Debbie Antonelli on the call.
RADIO: The game is on the Penn State Sports Network and WRSC 1390 locally with Jerry Fisher and Julia Trogele calling the action. The audio feed is available at www.GoPSUsports.com.
LAST TIME OUT: Senior center Talia East had a career night, recording her second collegiate double-double performance with a personal-best 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Lions to a 65-52 win over Indiana. The Lady Lions defense was the star of the game once again, holding the Hoosiers to 27.6% from the field and nabbing eight steals on 12 turnovers. East was 4-for-7 from the field and hit five of her eight free throws on the way to her 13 points. In addition to her 11 boards, she also blocked on shot. Seniors Ariel Edwards (Elmont, N.Y.) and Maggie Lucas (Narberth, Pa.) led the team in scoring with 18 points each. Edwards had a very efficient evening, shooting 6-of-8 from the floor, including 1-for-1 beyond the arc, and 5-of-6 at the free throw line. She added eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block to complete her performance. To go along with her 18 points, Lucas pulled down eight boards and chipped in two assists and a steal.
SCOUTING MINNESOTA: The Golden Gophers are 13-7 on the season with a 2-4 mark in Big Ten play. However, two of Minnesota's conference losses came in overtime. Junior Rachel Banham leads the conference in scoring at a 22.6 per game clip as she is connecting on 48.2% of her shots from beyond the arc. She also leads the team with 3.7 assists per game. Amanda Zahui is averaging a double-double with 14.4 scoring mark and a team-best 10.6 rebounds per game. Micaella Riche leads the team in field goal percentage (.542) while accounting for 7.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per outing. The Gophers has been solid defensively, leading the conference in scoring defense with a 61.2 mark.
ALL-TIME VERSUS THE GOLDEN GOPHERS: The Lady Lions are 26-12 all-time against Minnesota, including wins in six of the last seven meetings. PSU is 15-3 all-time in home games against the Hoosiers and have won the last three meetings in the BJC. The squads split a pair of meetings last season with each team winning on their home court. Penn State claimed a 64-59 win on Jan. 24 in the BJC, but the Gophers earned an 89-81 win in Minneapolis.
LAST TIME VERSUS MINN: Minnesota shot 66.7% from the field on the way to an 89-81 win over the Lady Lions on Feb. 28, 2013 at Williams Arena. Maggie Lucas accounted for a team-best 23 points to go along with two rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Alex Bentley added 19 points, three rebounds, three assists and four steals. Nikki Greene came on strong in the second half scoring all 15 of her points in the second half and pulling in eight of her nine boards after the break.
EYE ON CBS: The Lady Lions are making their 12th all-time appearance on CBS. This will be Penn State's third appearance on CBS under Coquese Washington. The Lions are 1-1 in games on CBS under Washington with a win at Michigan State her first season (69-57 on Jan. 5, 2008) and a loss to the Spartans at home (75-65 on Jan. 7, 2012). The last time Penn State was on CBS, Maggie Lucas connected on seven three-pointers and posted the first 30-point performance of her career with 33 tallies. The Lady Lions are 4-7 all-time in games televised on CBS.
EAST SEES A BOARD: Entering her senior season, Talia East had five double-digit rebounding performances in her career. In just 18 games this season, East already has five games with double figures in the rebounding column. East has also surpassed her rebounding total from all of last season (97) in just 18 contests (131). Her career high for caroms in a season is 173, set during her sophomore season.
CAREER SEASON IN THE "AIR": Senior guard/forward Ariel Edwards is having career season and the Lady Lions are just 18 games into the season. Edwards has already surpassed her scoring total from last season (252) with 255 tallies on the season. The 255 points are the most for the Elmont, N.Y., native in a single season. Additionally, Edwards has already achieved a personal-best 47 assists and 22 steals. Edwards' previous career-high in assists was 32 as a sophomore and she is working on doubling her collegiate total (68 in her first three seasons). The senior's previous personal mark for steals in a season was 22, set during her sophomore campaign. She is also on pace to have personal-best seasons in rebounds and blocks.
ANOTHER DOUBLE DIP FOR T: Senior center Talia East earned her second career double-double game with 13 points and 11 rebounds against Indiana on Jan. 22. East's 13 points are a career high, surpassing her previous mark of 12 set against Notre Dame (12/4/13). The senior attempted eight free throws surpassing her personal best of seven and tied her free throws made at five set against Purdue (2/4/13).
The Lady Lions hit the road for a pair of games at Purdue on Thursday at 6 p.m., a game that will air on the BTN, and at Northwestern on Sunday at 2 p.m. (ET). Penn State is back in the BJC to host Iowa on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. The game is a Dollar Dog Night and the Hat Drive.. Fans that donate a new hat to benefit THON receive a $5 ticket.
Lady Lion Basketball single-game and season tickets are available by calling 1-800-NITTANY. Single-game tickets are $15 and $12 for adults and seniors and $9 and $7 for youth (12 and younger). Season tickets are $99 for adults and $50 for youth (12 and under), this includes a Nittany Lion Kids Club Membership for 2013-14. New this year, the Lady Lions have introduced a Family Season Ticket package. For $200, fans will get two adult tickets and two youth tickets for the 2013-14 campaign. The PNC Flex Books are available again this year for $99. The Flex Book gives fans 12 vouchers, 10 that can be redeemed in any combination for Nittany Lion and Lady Lion Basketball tickets throughout the year and two extra vouchers for the Nittany Lions' Coaches Vs. Cancer game and the Lady Lions' Pink Zone game.
The 2014 Pink Zone at Penn State will take place on Sunday, Feb. 16 as the Lady Lions take on Wisconsin in the Bryce Jordan Center at 1 p.m. Last year, the Lady Lions donated a record $260,000 to breast cancer causes. This year's fundraising efforts will benefit the Mount Nittany Medical Center, Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, J.C.
