UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; January 25, 2014 - The Penn State women's gymnastics squad opened up Big Ten completion with a strong, 194.825-192.750, victory at Michigan State on Saturday. The Nittany Lions (7-1) used strong routines on three events, including a 49.000 on vault, to earn the win at Jenison Field House.
"We achieved our goal tonight at Michigan State when we got off to a great start on uneven bars," said head coach Jeff Thompson. "We didn't get off to a good start on floor, but we followed with some good routines, including a great performance on vault. Lindsay [Musgrove] put an exclamation point on the meet, as she stuck her vault to start the event, and Sidney [Sanabria-Robles] finished it off with a solid vault.
We had two more falls on balance beam tonight, but that is something we will address this week in practice and shore up as we head into a big meet at Ohio State."
Sidney Sanabria-Robles (Caguas, Puerto Rico) posted a career-best score 39.125 in the all-around to finish second to Michigan State's Alina Cartwright with a mark of 39.325. Sanabria-Robles scored 9.825 on the vault, 9.775 on uneven bars, 9.800 on the balance beam, 9.725 on floor exercise.
After winning two events and the all-around last weekend in the home opener, senior Kassidy Stauder (Palmerton, Pa.) won two more individual event titles and now has four event titles on the season. Stauder won the uneven bars crown with a score of 9.825 and took the balance beam title when she anchored the lineup with a mark of 9.875.
The Nittany Lions didn't have the high scorer on the vault, but took six of the next eight spots on the event to post thier second highest total of the season on the event. Lindsay Musgrove (League City, Texas), Sanabria-Robles and Krystal Welsh (Bowie, Md.) all tied for second place with scores of 9.825, while Randi Lau (Honolulu, Hawaii) finished fifth with a 9.800 showing.
With Stauder leading the uneven bars lineup, Sanabria-Robles and Welsh also had great showings, tying for second on the event with 9.775 marks. Robles also finished second on the balance beam with a score of 9.800, while Lau and Nicole Medvitz (Paramus, N.J.) tied for fourth with identical marks of 9.725.
Penn State will wrap up its short two-meet road swing in Columbus, Ohio on Feb. 1 at 4 p.m. against Ohio State.
