RICHMOND, Va. - Senior attackman Shane Sturgis (Downingtown, Pa.) was named Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week Monday afternoon following a career-best six-goal game against Michigan on Saturday.
Sturgis finished Saturday's 22-7 victory with seven points in all, becoming the first Nittany Lion since April 11, 2009 to score six goals in a game (Jack Forster vs. St. John's). The CAA player of the week honor is the second of his career following a four-goal outburst against Denver last season.
The high-scoring senior started quickly Saturday against the Wolverines by scoring just six seconds into the contest on a Drake Kreinz (Delafield, Wis.) assist. Kreinz made his collegiate debut as a faceoff man, scoring a goal and winning 15 of 22 faceoffs.
Sturgis scored his second goal 2:46 into the game before notching a hat trick with 1:26 left in the first period. Sturgis made the score 10-0 2:51 into the second period before notching his second five-goal game of his career with 2:38 remaining in the first half. Sturgis would dish his lone assist five minutes into the third quarter and capped his six-goal effort with five minutes remaining in the frame.
The Nittany Lions return to action this Saturday when they host No. 12 Loyola at Penn State Lacrosse Field. Opening faceoff against the Greyhounds is set for 1 p.m.
