UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - After helping Penn State secure its first conference victory with a 32-save shutout against No. 10 Michigan, sophomore goaltender Matthew Skoff (McKees Rocks, Pa.) has been named the Big Ten Second Star of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
A McKees Rocks, Pa., native, Skoff's performance in net Saturday (Feb. 8) helped earn the program's second victory against a ranked team and first triumph versus a top-10 foe. The goaltender earned his third career shutout and became the first Penn State weekly honoree this season. All three of Skoff's whitewashes have come in 4-0 victories.
Wisconsin goaltender Joel Rumpel earned Big Ten First Star of the Week honors, while Michigan State forward Greg Wolfe was named the conference's third star.
The Nittany Lions (5-18-1, 1-9-0-0 Big Ten) will return to action this weekend when they host Michigan State (8-13-6, 2-5-5-3 Big Ten) at Pegula Ice Arena Feb. 14-15. Friday night's game will air live on BTN at 6:30 p.m., while puck drop Saturday is set for 3:30 p.m. The series finale will broadcast live on ESPNews.
