Newbill Named NABC All-District

March 12, 2014

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - D.J. Newbill earned all-district honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), announced Wednesday on the eve of the Big Ten Tournament. The junior guard was named to the District 7 Second Team, joining four other Big Ten players.

Selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC, these student-athletes represent the finest basketball players across America. The 252 student-athletes, from 25 districts, are eligible for the NABC Coaches' Division I All-America teams.

Newbill was pronounced a Second Team All-Big Ten honoree earlier this week. The Philadelphia product wrapped up the regular season second in scoring in the Big Ten (17.8 ppg) and leads the league in total points (552) and field goals (192).

After a 23-point performance vs. Wisconsin March 2, Newbill earned a spot in Penn State's record books as the 31st 1,000-point scorer. He now ranks 25th all-time in career scoring with 1,056 points and posted 20 or more points four of the last six regular-season games. Newbill has tallied 552 points this season alone, becoming the fourth PSU player to reach 500-plus points in multiple seasons after registering 504 in 2012-13 and joining the likes of Talor Battle (three seasons), Jesse Arnelle (two) and Joe Crispin (two).

Newbill and the Nittany Lions now head into the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 10 seed and are slated to face seventh-seeded Minnesota in the first round at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
