UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- After completing 36 holes at the Briar's Creek Invitational, the Penn State women's golf team is tied for fifth with one round remaining. After posting a first round 309, the Nittany Lions shaved15 strokes off of their second round score to put them at 294. The 294 is tied for the lowest round of the tournament. The third and final round takes place on Tuesday with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun. "We need to have four solid scores much like our second round today," said head coach Denise St. Pierre. "I am very proud of how they came back. There are 17 good teams and we are hoping to finish solid."
Senior Christina Vosters (Bethany Beach, Del.) and junior Ellen Ceresko (Jefferson Township, Pa.) both posted second round scores of 75. Vosters is tied for fourth at three strokes over par. Ceresko posted a first round 73 and is tied for eighth with one round remaining. Sophomore Grace Chung (Ontario, Canada) posted a career low 69 in the second round.
GRU Augusta holds a four-stroke lead over East Carolina as the tournament culminates tomorrow. Penn State is seven strokes behind GRU Augusta. There is a three-way tie for first as F. Gustafsson Spang of East Carolina, Lauren Salazar of Clemson, and Alexandria Papell of Maryland all posted scores of one-over par through two rounds.
The teams had to battle through tough course conditions as there were high winds. The forecast for the final round is calling for heavy rain throughout the day.
