WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Penn State shot its lowest round on day three of the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate at the River Course at Kingsmill to improve to an eighth place overall finish in a field of 27 with a team score of 881 (303-292-286).
Two Nittany Lions finished in the top-20 individually. Junior Jens Talbert (Little Rock, Ark.) finished tied-for-10th with a 216 tally. Sophomore JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) moved up from his round two placing tying for 17th, shooting his lowest score on the final 18 holes to total a 218 (73-73-72).
Sophomore Chris Houston (Gilford, N.H.) marked a career-low round score of 69 Tuesday to earn him a 223 total and a tied-for-45th finish. Junior Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) and freshman Christian Elliott (Port Perry, Ontario) both shot a 228 through 54 holes.
Texas Tech held on to its lead to earn the 2014 Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate Championship with an 11-over 851 team mark. The Red Raiders also claimed the individual crown as Clement Sordet captured the first place crown by a margin of just one stroke.
Penn State will return to the links at the Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio April 12-13, followed by the team's home tournament, the Rutherford Intercollegiate, April 19-20.
