UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; April 16, 2014 - Junior Steve Waithe (Parkville, Md.) has earned Big Ten Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week while senior Mahagony Jones (Cleveland, Ohio) grabbed Big Ten Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week honors after outstanding performances this past weekend.
Waithe won the Bison Classic triple jump with a mark of 52-7.5, his lifetime best. His mark is currently first amongst all Big Ten competitors and fourth in the country this season. Waithe's honor is his first Big Ten weekly award, and also marks the Nittany Lions' first outdoor men's weekly Big Ten honor this spring.
Jones ran to two first-place finishes this past weekend at the Sun Angel Classic. She was second by a narrow margin, and now holds the nation's sixth-fastest time in the 200 meters (22.93). Her 200-meter time is currently fastest among Big Ten competitors. This is the second Big Ten Outdoor weekly honor for Jones, who also received the accolade last spring. Jones is the first Nittany Lion to win a Big Ten women's weekly honor this spring.
The Nittany Lions will split the squads again next weekend with some members heading to California for competition at the Mt. Sac Relays on Friday and Saturday, April 18-19, and the remainder of the team competing in the Bucknell Team Challenge on Saturday, April 19.
