Sophomore midfielder Madison Cyr (Westminster, Md.) scored four goals - all in the final 30 minutes - as the No. 12/16 Penn State women's lacrosse team erupted for eight second-half tallies in a 12-10 victory against No. 7/5 Johns Hopkins at the Penn State Lacrosse Field Friday evening.
The Nittany Lions improved to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in their final regular-season ALC game, while Johns Hopkins fell to 12-3 overall and 2-3 in league play. Penn State defeated a top-five foe for the first time since a 16-11 victory against then-No. 2 Florida during the 2013 season.
Trailing by a 7-4 margin at the half, the Nittany Lions opened the second stanza with four straight markers, including three from Cyr in a 26-second span, to take an 8-7 lead. The Blue Jays later tied the game at 8-8 and 9-9 before Penn State tallied three of the final four goals en route to the two-goal triumph. A Westminster, Md., native, Cyr netted four goals in a game for the fourth time this season.
Attacker Mackenzie Cyr (Westminster, Md.) registered a game-high three assists to push her career total to 102. The senior became just the third Nittany Lion in the program's 50-year history to reach the 100-assist mark and now sits just 13 helpers shy of tying Julie Tice's all-time mark.
In addition, sophomore Jenna Mosketti (Fallston, Md.) recorded a three-point game (2g, 1a), while junior Tatum Coffey (Toms River, N.J.), who collected a game-high three caused turnovers, added a goal and an assist. Freshman goalkeeper Cat Rainone (Newtown Square, Pa.) garnered the victory after making five saves in the final 40:06 of the game.
Penn State out shot the Blue Jays by a 26-18 margin and held a 15-9 advantage in draw controls. The Nittany Lions finished 10-for-12 on clears and 1-for-6 on free-position shots, while Johns Hopkins went 11-for-11 and 4-for-6, respectively.
In the first half, the Blue Jays stormed out of the gate with three straight goals within the first 7:16 of the game. Facing a three-goal deficit, junior attacker Kristin Brent (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) put the Nittany Lions on the board with 20:29 left in the half.
Johns Hopkins extended its lead to 4-1 with 15:155 remaining before Mosketti corralled the ensuing draw and fired a shot to the back of the net 11 seconds later. After the Blue Jays responded with pair of strikes to take a 6-2 lead with 10:33 left, Coffey brought the Nittany Lions to within three with just over 10 minutes remaining. Johns Hopkins then made it 7-3 with 1:50 left before Mackenzie Cyr gathered her 100th career assist with a quick pass to Maggie McCormick (Eldersburg, Md.) for the goal.
Sophomore midfielder Ally Heavens (Garnet Valley, Pa.) started the scoring spree in the second half with a free-position goal at 2:06 before Cyr's string of three straight goals put Penn State ahead by an 8-7 score. The Blue Jays sandwiched junior Kelly Lechner's (Silver Spring, Md.) goal as they tied game at 9-9 before Penn State ended the game on a 3-1 run.
Cyr added her team-leading 37th goal of the season with 10:20 left when she slipped a slow roller past the Hopkins netminder before Mosketti deposited the ball into an unoccupied net with 1:04 remaining. After Johns Hopkins made it a one-goal game with 39 seconds left, junior Jess Loizeaux (Mullica Hill, N.J.) scored off a feed from Mackenzie Cyr with seven seconds remaining to account for the 12-10 final.
The Nittany Lions will close out the regular season at home Saturday, April 26 when they welcome Princeton to the Penn State Lacrosse Field. The Senior Day matchup will begin at 3 p.m.
