Penn State to Host 38th Annual Rutherford Intercollegiate

April 18, 2014

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Nittany Lion men's golf program is set to host the 38th annual Rutherford Intercollegiate April 19-20 on the Penn State Blue Course.

The par-71, 7,202-yard site was host to the Big Ten Men's Golf Championship in 2009 and numerous other events conducted by the USGA, FCWT, AJGA, IJGT, PGA Junior Series and the West Penn Golf Association. With the updates and renovations made in 2007, the Penn State Blue Course now proudly sits with some of the top courses in the Big Ten.

The 14-team field will include current and future Big Ten members Minnesota, Rutgers and Maryland. Xavier, Bowling Green State, Eastern Michigan, Seton Hall, University of Connecticut, Army, Youngstown State, La Salle, Wright State, and Binghamton, the 2013 team champion, will add to the competition.

Penn State will be looking to capture its 23rd Rutherford Intercollegiate title, the last coming in 2011. Starting for the Lions will be the pair of juniors Jens Talbert (Little Rock, Ark.) and Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, N.Y.), and sophomores JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.), Chris Houston (Gilford, N.H.) and Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.).

The remainder of the Blue and White roster will compete as individuals, including freshmen Cody Cox (Milford, Pa.) and Christian Elliott (Port Perry, Ontario), and junior Ryan Worthy (Chester Springs, Pa.).

The injury status of senior captain Shane Stewart (Dublin, Ohio) is day-to-day.

Both days of the tournament will begin with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Live scoring via student-athlete mobile devices can be followed on www.GolfStat.com.
