Lady Lions' Edwards Signs With Tulsa Shock

April 22, 2014

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - Penn State Lady Lion senior guard/forward Ariel Edwards (Elmont, N.Y.) has signed a free agent contract with the WNBA's Tulsa Shock. Training camp opens this week. Edwards joins nine-year WNBA vet Tanisha Wright (Seattle), 2013 WNBA All-Rookie team selection Alex Bentley (Connecticut) and Maggie Lucas, who was the 21st overall pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury, as Lady Lions in training camp.

"Ariel has had a great career at Penn State and I look forward to seeing her in camp," said Fred Williams, head coach of the Tulsa Shock. "Ariel had a terrific senior year at Penn State. She's a powerful presence in the post and can help us in our interior area."

Edwards embraced her role as a full time starter this season, posting personal bests in nearly every statistical category. She jumped her scoring production by nearly eight points per game in her senior season, finishing seventh in the Big Ten with a 15.7 scoring average on the way to All-Big Ten first team honors for the first time in her career. Additionally, Edwards was second on the team in rebounding, pulling in 5.7 boards per game. She was also among the conference leaders in free throw percentage, finishing eighth with an .814 mark from the charity stripe. Edwards became the 36th member of Penn State's 1,000-point club with her performance in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Elmont, N.Y. native finished her career ranked 34th in Penn State history in scoring (1,054), 14th in career free throw percentage (.784) and sixth in career three-point field goal percentage (.395). Her 118 free throws made as a senior place her 19th on the program's single-season charts and her 503 points are tied for 29th.
