UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Rising junior Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.) was named a 2014 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award Honoree Wednesday, joining eleven other conference student-athletes recognized for the accolade.
The Sportsmanship Award goes to those individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. Additionally, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
"Geoff [Vartelas] plays with a great deal of passion, and through it all remains a true gentleman to compete against," head coach Greg Nye said. "He represents Penn State with the utmost pride."
Vartelas concluded his sophomore campaign competing in seven tournaments for the Nittany Lions, including the Big Ten Championships. Vartelas averaged a 76.45 on the year, firing a low single-round score of 70 (69 career low). He will enter his junior year at Penn State with 43 collegiate rounds of play under his belt and 3,294 strokes.
