PSU Swimming and Diving to Offer Four Camps This Summer

May 13, 2014

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Head coach Tim Murphy and the Penn State swimming and diving program will host four camps this summer. The first camp offered by the Nittany Lions will be the Swim I: Start & Turn session from June 13-15, followed by Swim II (June15-19), Swim III: Start & Turn (June 20-22) and Swim IV (June 22-26). All camps are open to students entering grades 4-12, as well as recent high school graduates who are not currently enrolled in college. Registration is currently open at GoPSUsports.com/camps/swim-camp.

Murphy led the Blue and White to a very successful finish in his first year at the helm, guiding the men to a 17th place finish and the women to an 18th place finish at the 2014 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. In total, 14 student-athletes received CSCAA (College Swimming Coaches Association of America) All-America recognition, with two earning first team laurels.

Penn State Competitive Start & Turn Camps will only focus on starts and turns. The emphasis will be on turning these often overlooked skills into a true competitive advantage. Swimmers will receive intensive instruction on the forward and backstroke starts with safety being a priority. Fast, legal turns for all four competitive strokes and the IM transition turns will be covered. Each athlete will receive individual attention from a staff of outstanding coaches and instructors. Each camper will receive a DVD analyzing his or her technique in their start and turns.

Penn State Competitive Swimming Camps are structured around a philosophy of teaching skill acquisition and development in all four competitive strokes. Three daily water sessions are led by a world-class staff. Workouts are structured to improve stroke technique with a combination of drills, skills and training. Each athlete will have opportunities to enhance all phases of competitive swimming through individualized attention from our excellent coaches and counselors. Individual stroke analysis, dry land instruction and lecture sessions will give the campers one of the most comprehensive and up-to-date training camp experiences available in the United States. Each camper will receive a DVD analyzing all four strokes.

Penn State boasts some of the finest swimming facilities in the nation. McCoy Natatorium has a heated Olympic-size (50m) outdoor pool and three indoor pools: a six-lane, 25-yard racing pool; a six-lane, 25-meter instructional pool; and a deep diving well, used for start and turn instruction. The racing and diving pools have underwater observation windows for analyzing stroke technique. The Natatorium has more than 500 lockers and a gallery that seats 1,500. The pool deck has ample space for stretching and dry land instruction. The campers will train in the outdoor 50-meter course in the morning and move to the short-course, indoor pools for the afternoon and evening technique sessions.

Past or current membership on a swimming team is required for camp enrollment. Campers must bring their own goggles, swim suits, towel(s), tennis shoes and appropriate dry land attire.
