Nittany Lions Split for Weekend Events

May 2, 2014

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -

The Nittany Lions will split squads this weekend as a few distance runners will head out west to the Payton Jordan Invite while a huge contingent of Lions will head to the Maryland Twilight meet that will be held Friday. This is the first time in the programs history that Penn State will be competing at a Maryland track and field meet.

Steve Waithe (Parkville, M.d.) will look to build off of his Penn Relays victory by competing in the men's long jump this weekend at Maryland. Waithe jumped a personal best of 53 feet last weekend in triple jump to grab his first Penn Relays championship. Waithe's jump currently ranks him first in the NCAA. Also looking to build off of a Penn Relays individual championship will be junior Darrell Hill (Philadelphia, Pa.). Hill won the Penn Relays men's shot put with a personal best toss of 63 feet and 11 inches.

On the women's side, senior Laura Loht (McClure, Pa.) will look to improve her mark in the javelin throw after winning Penn Relays a week ago. Including Loht's win last weekend, the Nittany Lions currently have five straight wins in the event at Penn. The Nittany Lions have dominated the event over the years, with a total of eight titles in the books - the most by any program in Relays history. Sophomore Kiah Seymour (Washington, D.C.) will compete in the women's 400-meter hurdles as she looks to take a shot at Fawn Dorrs school record of 55.57.

Out west, Brannon Kidder (Lancaster, Ohio) will be competing in the men's 1500 and his training partner Za'Von Watkins (Liverpool, N.Y.) will be competing in the men's 800. Matt Fischer (Kennett Square, Pa.) will get another chance in the men's 5000. On the ladies side, senior Marta Klebe (Chesterbrook, Pa.) will run in the women's 1500 as she looks to improve her season best time of 4:20.55.
