UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State's track & field squad continued its exceptional outdoor season Friday at the Kehoe Twilight track & field meet at the University of Maryland. The Nittany Lion men scored 222 points to take the meet while Maryland finished second with 89 points. The Penn State women's team compiled 210.5 points to second-place Maryland's 168.
Track results on Friday were highlighted by the NCAA's fastest 400-meter hurdles of the year from sophomore Kiah Seymour (Washington, D.C.). Seymour's run of 55.88 is the second fastest in Penn State history. Teammate Evonne Britton (El Paso, Texas) was second in the 400 hurdles, crossing the line with a time of 59.43.
This week's Big Ten Co-Field Athlete of the Week, junior Darrell Hill (Philadelphia, Pa.) continued his tear, winning the shot put with facility-record throw of 64-5.25. Hill's lifetime best mark is third all-time at Penn State.
Sophomore Rachel Fatherly (Williamsport, Pa.) tallied three wins on the night with victories in the shot put, discus and hammer throw. Fatherly's shot put throw of 50-6.75 is seventh all-time in Penn State history. Freshman Alyssa Robinson (Saint Clairsville, Ohio) took third place in the shot put with a distance of 45-04.25. Robinson also finished third in the hammer throw.
Redshirt-senior Will Barr (Urbana, Ohio) was a double-winner on the night with victories in the discus (175-07) and hammer throw (192-04). Junior Dan Jordan (Boalsburg, Pa.) placed third in the hammer.
The top spot in the javelin on both sides went to Penn State, with sophomore Michael Shuey (Johnsonburg, Pa.) and sophomore Laura Loht (McClure, Pa.) finished first. Loht threw for 171-05 to grab the win and teammate Lauren Kenney (State College, Pa) was second. Senior Megan Boyer (Millersburg, Pa.) took the third spot on the women's side with a PR of 146-07. Shuey found victory with a throw of 226-09 and senior Rusty Hedrick (Schwenksville, Pa.) finished second with a PR throw of 197-02.
The pole vault also belonged to the Nittany Lions with junior Dylan Bilka (Seven Fields, Pa.), freshman Brandon Teribery (Bradford, Pa.) and freshman Rob Cardina (Lancaster, Pa.) finishing 1-2-3. Freshman Lexi Masterson (Jeannette, Pa.) captured the victory on the women's side with a clearance of 12.00-00.
Penn State owned the men's 400 meters, taking the top four spots. Senior Brandon Bennett-Green (Elkins Park, Pa.) won in a time of 47.32 seconds, sophomore Alex Shisler (State College, Pa.) was second, and seniors Bernard Bennett-Green (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Aaron Nadolsky (Altoona, Pa.) completed the sweep of the event.
Junior Dynasty McGee (Flint, Mich.) captured the 400 meters in a lifetime best time of 53.25, which is fifth-best all time for the Nittany Lions. McGee, Britton, Seymour and freshman Christina Cianciarulo (New Britian, Pa.) teamed-up for the win in the 4x100 in a time of 46.36.
Both the men's and women's 100-meter hurdles were Penn State victories, with Britton winning in 13.01 and junior Shelley Black (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) finishing second. On the men's side, junior Sancho Barrett (Amityville, N.Y.) took the win in 14.19 and Cardina was second with a 14.67.
Freshman Megan Osborne (Chillicothe, Ohio) won the 200 meters while classmate Danielle Gibson (Nassau, Bahamas) notched two Top 3 finishes, finishing second in the long jump (19.06-25) and third in the women's 100-meter dash (12.27). Senior Marlene Ricketts (Old Westbury, N.Y.) finished third in the triple jump (40-03.50).
Junior Steve Waithe (Parkville, Md.) and junior Brian Leap (Bellwood, Pa.) went 1-2 in the long jump and Leap also took second in the triple jump. Senior Jon Hendershot (Nazareth, Pa.) cleared 6-11.50 for first in the high jump. Junior Michael McClelland (Washington, Pa.) finished third.
Leap, Barrett, junior Alex Kenney (State College, Pa.) and Nadolsky finished first in the 4x100 relay in 41.91. Kenney also took third in the 100 meter dash. Junior Wade Endress (Altoona, Pa.) was also third in the 800 meters.
The Nittany Lions compete next in the Payton Jordan Invite at Stanford on Sunday, May 4. Penn State is home next Friday, May 9, for it's only outdoor meet of the year, the Jim Thorpe Invitational.
