Captains Named for Upcoming Swimming and Diving Season

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State swimming and diving has announced the men's and women's captains for the 2014-15 season. On the women's side, Caitlyn Karr (Reading, Pa.) and Carolyn Fittin (Sea Girt, N.J.) will lead the squad, while Nate Savoy (Reading, Pa.) and Larry Virgilio (Pine Bush, N.Y.) received the honors for the men's team. Each of the four athletes was voted into the leadership role by their peers.

Karr is one of seven seniors in the 2014-15 senior class. The Reading native earned honorable mention All-America honors in 2013-14 as a member of the 14th-place 800 freestyle relay squad and the 16th-place 400 freestyle relay team at the NCAA Championships. Karr finished the season with the second fastest 100 freestyle time on the team after turning in a personal-best mark of 49.71 for 10th place at the Big Ten Championships. She was also a member of the 800 freestyle relay team that set a program record during the 2013-14 campaign.

Fittin had a notable junior season as well, earning honorable mention All-America laurels after helping the 400 free relay team and 200 medley relay team to top-16 finishes at the NCAA Championships. The Sea Girt, New Jersey product registered four top-10 finishes at the Big Ten Championships and garnered second team All-Big Ten honors in the process. Fittin posted the second best times on the squad in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle and was third on the team in the 100 butterfly. She also helped lead the PSU 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay squads to program-best marks at the Big Ten Championships.

Savoy is one of the seniors in the 11-man senior class for the upcoming season. The backstroke extraordinaire turned in a fantastic season as a junior for the Blue and White, earning honorable mention All-America honors to go along with first team All-Big Ten accolades. Savoy placed ninth in the 100 backstroke at the NCAA Championships in March and grabbed a second place finish at the 2014 Big Ten Championships.

Virgilio is the fourth captain for the Nittany Lions during the 2014-15 campaign. The senior to be competed in the 50 and 100 freestyle events last season, picking up two victories, one in each event, at the Ohio State Invite in early February. Virgilio turned in a personal best time in the 100 freestyle during his junior campaign, touching the wall in 45.60 seconds.
