Penn State Concludes Season at Big Ten Championships

FRENCH LICK, Ind. - The Penn State men's golf team rounded out its 2013-14 campaign at the Big Ten Championships Sunday with a ninth place finish among the 12-team conference field. The Nittany Lions posted a four-round total of 1221(307-300-315-299) on the Pete Dye Course, edging their 2013 mark by three strokes.

Junior Jens Talbert (Little Rock, Ark.) held on to his tied-for-24th place ranking from round three, shooting a 74 on the final 18 holes to bring his tournament score to a 304. Junior JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) improved 11 places on the third day of play to finish tied-for-31st. Dornes tallied a 306 through 72 holes.

Sophomore Chris Houston (Gilford, N.H.) shot a 77 Sunday to bring his four-round total to a 308, earning him a tied-for-41st finish. Junior Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) notched a 310, while sophomore Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.) shot his best 18-hole score in round four (75) to total a 317.

Minnesota took the 2014 Big Ten Championship crown, besting runner-up Illinois by four strokes. Minnesota and Illinois also battled it out on the individual leaderboard, as Golden Gopher Jose Mendez and Fighting Illini Charlie Danielson both fired a 1-over 289.
