UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State baseball LHP Nick Hedge (Winnetka, Ill.) was named the 919 Marketing Coastal Plain League (CPL) Pitcher of the Week for June 30-July 6 on Monday.
A member of the Martinsville Mustangs, Hedge threw nine shutout innings in his first appearance of the season against the Columbia Blowfish on July 5. He allowed just one hit, striking out six and surrendering one walk. The left-hander held the Blowfish hitless until the fifth inning and used just 89 pitches over the course of nine innings.
As a sophomore for the Nittany Lions in 2014, Hedge tossed 37.2 innings and struck out 23 in 12 appearances.
The CPL is a summer collegiate baseball league that features 14 teams in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The league gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. The CPL has had over 1,200 former players drafted and 70 former players - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far; while another notable former CPL player - Russell Wilson - won Super Bowl XLVIII as the quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks.
