UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's lacrosse team was named an Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Academic Honor Squad, the organization announced Monday morning.
In all, 84 schools earned the distinction after earning a team grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. All seven programs from the American Lacrosse Conference (Florida, Johns Hopkins, Michigan, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Vanderbilt) received the honor.
In addition, 15 student-athletes earned Academic All-Big Ten honors during a record-breaking spring for Penn State. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
During the 2014 season, the Nittany Lions recorded their fifth straight 10-win season and advanced to the NCAA tournament in three straight seasons for the first time since 1995-97. With the additions of Maryland and Rutgers to the Big Ten, the league will sponsor women's lacrosse for the first time in 2015. Penn State will open Big Ten play with a trip to Rutgers the weekend of March 26.
