UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Behind a career-high three goals from senior Taylor Herold (Fredericksburg, Va.), No. 6 Penn State field hockey defeated No. 14 Princeton, 5-2, at the Field Hockey Complex Friday night. The Nittany Lions used three goals in a span of 3:26 early in the second half to secure the victory. All five Penn State goals were scored in the second stanza.

The Nittany Lions improve to 4-1 on the season, picking up their third win over a ranked opponent. The Tigers dropped to 0-3.

Penn State received an early chance as senior Laura Gebhart (Mount Joy, Pa.) weaved her way through the defenders and fired a shot on goal that was saved by Princeton goalkeeper Anya Gersoff with 18:53 to go in the opening half.

The Tigers got on the board first, as Ryan McCarthy secured a pass from Lexi Quirk and recorded the goal with 13:01 to go in the first half. The score remained 1-0 entering the break.

Penn State answered in the first five minutes of the second half. First, senior Jenna Chrismer (Mountain Top, Pa.) put a shot on goal that was saved, then collected her own rebound and scored to knot the score at 1-1 with 30:34 remaining.

Just over a minute later, the Nittany Lions earned a penalty corner. Sophomore Emilee Ehret (Philadelphia, Pa.) inserted to Herold, who drove the ball into the back of the cage from the top of the circle at the 29:07 mark.

With 27:08 left in regulation, Chrismer centered a pass from the end-line to the front of the cage, which was corralled and put in the net by sophomore Carly Celkos (Berlin, N.J.) for her first career goal. Penn State took a 3-1 lead in a span of 3:26.

Herold struck again with 20:16 to go, scoring on a reverse shot into the corner of the net to give the Nittany Lions a 4-1 advantage.

The Tigers found the back of the cage later, trimming the lead to 4-2 with 15:43 on the clock.

With less than 10 minutes on the clock, Chrismer and Herold connected on a breakaway. Chrismer dribbled in the circle and dished to Herold. As the Princeton goalkeeper came out to intercept, Herold flicked the ball over her and into the back of the cage. The Nittany Lions took a 5-2 lead with 9:11 remaining in regulation and would hold on for the victory.

The Nittany Lions are back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m., taking on Lafayette at the Field Hockey Complex.
