UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Penn State women's tennis team wrapped up the third and final day of the opening tournaments of the season Sunday. At the Cissie Leary Invitational, both Kelly Mengel (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Taylor Shukow (Boca Raton, Fla.) ended on positive notes by winning their matches. Mengel defeated Emily Gitman of Richmond in the Flight A consolation match. Mengel went on to defeat Anna Abidias of Richmond 4-6, 6-3, 10-7. Shukow beat Nicole Berkman of U Penn 6-1, 6-2 in the same flight.

In the doubles consolation bracket, Samantha Tutelman (New York, N.Y.) and Taylor Shukow were defeated by Zordani and Li of Yale 8-3. Kelly Mengel and Liyin Xu (Chengdu, China) fell to Muliawan and Goepel of Princeton 8-2. Mengel and Xu filled in for the doubles team of Daniel and Eskenazi of U Penn.

We had four girls where this was their first collegiate competition, so we entered this tournament with the goal of playing a lot of matches," said assistant coach Mike Fenwick. "We played better as the weekend went along, which is always great to see."

The third and final day of the Midland Tournament was postponed for the second time in three days due to rain. The matches will not be made up and the tournament is over.
