Men's Golf to Open Season at Wolverine Intercollegiate

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's golf team opens its 2014-15 season at the two-day Wolverine Intercollegiate Sept. 6-7 in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The University of Michigan will host a 12-team field including Eastern Michigan, Fresno State, Harvard, Kansas, Miami (Ohio), Penn State, Rutgers, San Jose State, Wichita State, Wisconsin and Xavier. The U-M Golf Course is a par 71 and 6,704 yards.

Senior Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, N.Y.), juniors Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.) and JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) and sophomore Christian Elliott (Port Perry, Ontario) are among the starters for the Nittany Lions.

A pair of freshmen will also make their collegiate golf debuts Saturday. Josh Rinehart (York, Pa.) will contribute to the team score while Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.) will compete as an individual.

"We will get a look at our two freshman this weekend and also watch how Xander [McDonald-Smith] and JD [Dornes] represent with both coming in with quality results from the summer," head coach Greg Nye said.

Penn State is looking to best their sixth place finish in the 2013 Wolverine Intercollegiate, where they posted an 864 three-round score.
