HAMDEN, Conn. - With the help of two goals from senior Taylor Herold (Fredericksburg, Va.) and an offense that put 28 shots on goal, the No. 8 Penn State field hockey team downed Quinnipiac, 4-0, in Hamden, Conn., Sunday.

"It was great to see the team come out hungry in the first half," said head coach Charlene Morett-Curtiss. "We really played as a team today and therefore generated a lot of attack opportunities."

Penn State improved to 3-1 on the season, while Quinnipiac fell to 0-3. The Nittany Lions held a 37-6 advantage in shots and allowed just one shot on goal in the contest. Penn State received 15 penalty corner attempts and surrendered just two to Quinnipiac.

The Nittany Lions came out firing in the first half, outshooting the Bobcats 24-2 in the opening period, including a 20-0 shots on goal advantage. Penn State created offensive opportunities by earning 13 penalty corners in the first stanza.

Herold got the Nittany Lions on the board first 5:47 into the contest. Classmate Jenna Chrismer (Moutain Top, Pa.) put a shot on goal, which was saved by the Quinnipiac goalkeeper. Herold collected the rebound and put it into the back of the cage.

Herold scored again with 19:34 to go in the period, going coast-to-coast and scoring an unassisted goal. It marks her seventh multi-goal game of her career and her first of the season.

Another senior, Laura Gebhart (Mount Joy, Pa.), scored her first goal of the season with just under four minutes to go in the half. Gebhart hauled in a centering pass from classmate Katie Breneman (Washington Boro, Pa.), and drove it in from about 10 feet out.

The Nittany Lions took a 4-0 lead with 12 seconds to go in the opening period when freshman Kasey Morano (Hammonton, N.J.) put one in a wide open goal after redshirt senior Natalie Buttinger (Kitchener, Ontario) fed her a pass near the post.

Neither team scored in the second half, but Penn State still tallied 13 shots in the period. Freshmen Skyler Fretz (Oley, Pa.) and Shay Cannon (Wilmington, Del.) each made their Nittany Lion debut.

Penn State is back in action at home on Friday, Sept. 12, taking on Princeton at 6 p.m. The Nittany Lions also host Lafayette on Sunday, Sept. 14, at 1 p.m.
