Men's Golf Finishes Second in Season Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Penn State men's golf team posted a 3-over-par 855 (289-287-279) to finish second in a field of 11 at the Wolverine Intercollegiate Sunday in Ann Arbor, Mich. Junior JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) paced the Nittany Lions with a tied-for-third placing and 5-under 208 on the U-M Golf Course.

"JD [Dornes] just continues to play at higher and higher levels," head coach Greg Nye said. "His play challenged his teammates to step it up in a big way."

Freshman Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.) finished ninth overall as an individual in his collegiate golf debut, tallying a 66 in the final round to jump 22 places and total an even par 213 three-round score. Junior Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.) and freshman Josh Rinehart (York, Pa.), marked 217's to place tied for 23rd.

"The promise we see in the play of Josh [Rinehart] and Cole [Miller] is exciting without question," Nye said.

Sophomore Christian Elliott (Port Perry, Ontario) shot his low round of 69 on the final 18 holes to finish tied for 32nd with a 220 while senior Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) rounded out Penn State's starting lineup with a 222 and tied-for-42nd position.

Michigan owned both leaderboards throughout the tournament, finishing with a 7-under-par 845 team score as Kyle Mueller claimed the title for the Wolverines, edging San Jose State's Cody Blick by one stroke.

The Nittany Lions will continue the 2014-15 season Sept. 20-21 at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate in Noblesville, Ind.
