UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's tennis team had two players represented in the ITA preseason polls, released Monday. Junior Leonard Stakhovsky (Kiev, Ukraine) is ranked 29th in the singles poll. Stakhovsky and sophomore Alex Fennell (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) are ranked 43rd in the doubles poll.
Stakhovsky will look to build on a strong sophomore campaign in which he went 18-8 while playing exclusively at the No. 1 singles spot. Stakhovsky won eight matches against ranked opponents, including four against Top 25 opponents. Stakhovsky reached as high as 33rd in the ITA Poll and was selected to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships.
The Kiev, Ukraine native combined with Russell Bader to go 19-7 at the top doubles spot. The duo had six wins against ranked opponents, including three against the Top 25. They were ranked as high as 28th in the ITA Poll and reached the second round of the NCAA Doubles Championships.
With Bader graduated, Fennell will look to pair with Stakhovsky. Fennell went 6-4 overall in doubles last year, including 1-1 in dual matches, while combining with three different partners.
The Nittany Lions kick off their fall schedule on September 26 at the Penn Invite. That weekend, they will also send team members to the ITA All-American Championships.
