COLUMBUS, Ohio - Freshman forward David Goodwin (Des Peres, Mo.) netted his fifth goal of the season, but the Penn State men's hockey team fell to Ohio State, 5-1, at Value City Arena Friday night. The Nittany Lions fell to 4-16-1 overall (0-7-0-0 Big Ten), while the Buckeyes improved to 13-9-1 (3-5-1-0 Big Ten).
Ohio State scored once in the opening 20 minutes and three straight in the middle stanza before the Nittany Lions cracked the scoreboard in the third period. The Buckeyes then answered Goodwin's goal with an empty-net tally to account for the 5-1 final. Ohio State's Ryan Dzingel led all players with three points (2g, 1a).
Penn State, which out shot its opponent for the fourth time in the past five games, held a 47-32 shots advantage. The Nittany Lions went 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Buckeyes finished 1-for-5 with the man advantage. Freshman netminder Eamon McAdam (Perkasie, Pa.), who surrendered four goals, turned aside 27 shots.
The Nittany Lions out shot the Buckeyes by a 17-13 margin in the first period, but the home team skated into the locker room with a 1-0 lead. With 10:30 remaining, Justin DaSilva's point shot was turned aside, but Tanner Fritz located the rebound and passed to Max McCormick outside the crease for the goal.
In the second period, Ohio State netted three markers, including two strikes in a 26-second span, to widen its lead. After a Penn State penalty, Chad Niddery won a race to the puck before finding Matt Johnson in the slot at 5:31 of the frame.
McCormick made it a 3-0 game with his second tally at 5:57. While on the power play, the forward found Dzingel's rebound outside the crease for the goal. Fritz garnered his second assist of the game on the play.
The Buckeyes added a shorthanded strike with 5:56 remaining in the stanza. Nick Oddo found Dzingel streaking through the neutral zone, where he skated behind the Penn State defense and scored on a breakaway.
In the third period, Goodwin cut the Ohio State lead to 4-1 with 16:05 left in the frame. After intercepting a clearing attempt, the Des Peres, Mo., native fired a turnaround wrister from the left circle for the power-play goal.
The Buckeyes added their fifth goal at 8:29. After both teams picked up minors, the Nittany Lions pulled McAdam to have a 5-on-4 advantage. With the goaltender pulled, a Penn State pass jumped behind the defense and slid into the Nittany Lion defensive zone, where Dzingel knocked the puck into the unoccupied net.
