UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; Oct. 18, 2014 - The No. 12 Penn State men's soccer team was shut out for the second game in a row by No. 16 Michigan State, 2-0, in a high-intensity all-Big Ten match up Saturday night at Jeffrey Field.
Penn State (10-2-1, 4-2-0 Big Ten) out-shot Michigan State (9-2-2, 3-1-1 Big Ten), 12-6, and attempted nine more corner kicks than the Spartans (11-2), but still wasn't able to overcome the two-goal margin set in the first half.
The Spartans took the lead in the 22nd minute when Jason Stacy found the lower-right corner of the net off a corner kick from Dewey Lewis.
Four minutes later, Jay Chapman notched the Michigan State's second goal when he sent Adam Montague's through ball past Andrew Wolverton's (Atlanta, Georgia) left side.
The Nittany Lions tried to capitalize on a corner kick in the first five minutes of the second half, but the Michigan State defensive front proved too strong on the attempt. The Blue and White maintained possession, though, before junior Brian James (Sunrise, Fla.) attempted a free kick from the right corner just outside the box. Again, the Spartans held tough and headed the ball out of Nittany Lion territory.
The intensity of the conference matchup continued through sweeping rain at Jeffrey Field. With 27:15 left to play, Penn State got another chance with a corner kick from the left side. After a series of headers by the two opponents, the ball was cleared out of the box by the Spartan defense.
Seven more corner attempts later, the Nittany Lions remained scoreless despite controlling possession for the majority of the half. Sophomore Mark Wadid (Mississauga, Ontario) fired the last shot at the Spartans in the final five seconds with a ball that soared just above the crossbar as time ran out.
The Nittany Lions return to action Wed., Oct. 22 at 7:00 p.m. when they host West Virginia.
