KNOXVILLE, TENN. - The Penn State women's golf team completed the third and final round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships, finishing with 306 strokes (+22). Overall, the Nittany Lions came in 14th place with 924 total strokes (+72).
Senior Katlyn Elliott (Peterborough, Ontario) lead the way for Penn State this weekend as she scored a two-over 73 on the final day and she finished the tournament +16 (229) for 45th place. Freshman Ariana Coyle Diaz (Mount Merrion, Ireland) played well throughout the day shooting a 76 (+5). Coyle Diaz finished tied for 57th for the tournament at +19 (232).
Senior Erin Michel (Mason, Ohio) carded a 78 (+7) after firing a +1 on her back nine. Michel placed tied for 60th with an overall score of +20 (233). Junior Grace Chung (Richmond Hill, Ontario) concluded her tournament with a +8 (79) and was tied for 51st with a +17 (230) on the weekend. Junior Halley Morell (Brecksville, Ohio) rounded out the side with a +9 (80) on Sunday.
Nittany Lion coach Denise St. Pierre was upbeat with the performance stating, "I was proud of a few of the players and their rounds. We just have to get a low round to trade with counting an 80."
The second-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks pulled out the victory on the final day of the tournament with a three-under 281 in the final round. The Gamecocks finished 14 strokes ahead of second place Tennessee. Nanna Madsen of South Carolina clinched the individual victory by shooting even par on the final day. Madsen was the only player in the field to finish under par after 3 rounds with a one-under 212.
Penn State's next and final fall tournament, the Landfall Tradition, will take place next weekend Oct 24-26 in Wilmington, N.C.
