UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's golf team wrapped up the first round of the Nittany Lion Invitational Friday, playing through gloomy skies and windy conditions. The Nittany Lions currently sit in 13th place after posting a score of 308 (+32).
Freshman Ariana Coyle Diez (Mount Merrion, Ireland) played as an individual and fired a career-low single round tally of 68 (-4). Coyle Diez is currently leading the 89-player field by two strokes. She finished the back nine with 33 (-3) strokes and had five birdies on the day.
Sophomores Kendall Allen (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Meaghan Coleman (The Woodlands, Texas) and junior Kate Granahan (Allentown Pa.) also competed as individuals for the Blue and White. Granahan shot a 74 (+2) to finish tied for eighth, while Allen posted a 76 (+4) to sit in a tie for 18th place. Coleman carded an eight-over 80 and is tied for 49th.
Senior Katlyn Elliott (Peterborough, Ontario) led the Penn State starters with 78 (+6) strokes. Three strokes behind Elliott was senior Elyse Archambault (St-Jean-sur-Rich, Quebec), who shot 81 (+9). Fellow seniors Erin Michel (Mason, Ohio) and Catherine Herrera (Houston, Texas) finished with a pair of 82s (+10).
Junior Grace Chung (Richmond Hill, Ontario) rounded out the lineup by carding an 83 (+11). Senior Ellen Ceresko (Jefferson Township, Pa.) withdrew on the 16th hole.
Yale leads the field at the Nittany Lion Invitational with an eight-over 296 as a team. Columbia is in second place at +9 and Western Michigan rounds out the top three at +10.
The field will tee off again tomorrow at 9 a.m. from the first and 10th tees. Admission for all spectators will be free on Saturday and Sunday at Penn State Blue Course. Kids 12 and under will receive a Penn State women's golf t-shirt and the Nittany Lion mascot will also be taking pictures from 11 a.m. to noon.
