UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa..; Oct. 30, 2014 - The No. 6 Penn State women's soccer team earned its eighth clean sheet of the season after a strong defensive effort in a 1-0 win over Maryland in the Nittany Lions' regular season finale on Thursday.
Penn State, the 2014 Big Ten Champion, begins postseason play Wed., Nov. 5 at the Big Ten Tournament maintaining a 17-2 overall record and a 12-1 mark in conference play.
In their eighth shutout of the year, the Nittany Lions limited Maryland (5-7-6, 3-5-5 Big Ten) to just two shots on frame. Britt Eckerstrom (Germantown, Md.) picked up her 17th win of the year and her seventh solo clean sheet.
The Blue and White got on the board in the 20th minute thanks to three first-year Lions. Megan Schafer (Langhorne, Pa.) made a quick pass along the midline to Maddie Elliston (Omaha, Neb.), who danced around a Maryland player. She then fed a long ball to Frannie Crouse (Greensburg, Pa.) and using her speed to outrun the Terrapins took a shot that tipped off the goaltender's hand, hit the nearside post and bounced into the net for the 1-0 lead.
Emily Hurd (Sammamish, Wash.) was a force to be reckoned with on the field, posting six shots, almost half of Penn State's total (13).
Penn State embarks on the 2014 postseason at the Big Ten Tournament, hosted by Purdue, on Wed., Nov. 5.
