PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Posting its second shutout win of the weekend, the No. 9 Penn State field hockey team defeated No. 14 Temple, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon. Seniors Taylor Herold (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Laura Gebhart (Mount Joy, Pa.) each found the back of the cage in the victory.

"It was an exciting weekend for Penn State field hockey, collecting two shutouts on the road," said head coach Charlene Morett-Curtiss. "The defense played very well today, limiting Temple's opportunities. Laura and Taylor put two beautiful goals in the corner of the cage. I'm very proud of our team and our play. In both games, we really played smart possession hockey. It was great to see so many alums in Philadelphia this weekend."

The Nittany Lions improved to 10-2, while the Owls moved to 8-4. Penn State outshot Temple, 23-8 and held an 11-1 advantage in penalty corners. The defense helped the Nittany Lions secure their fourth shutout of the season.

Penn State created plenty of opportunities early, outshooting Temple 16-3 in the opening half. The Nittany Lions earned eight penalty corners in the period, not allowing one for the Owls.

With 4:26 to go until the break, the Nittany Lions received their final penalty corner of the half. Sophomore Emilee Ehret (Philadelphia, Pa.) inserted to Gebhart, who stopped it and fed it to Herold. Herold fired a shot to the back of the cage to put Penn State up 1-0, the only goal of the period. The assist for Gebhart moved her into sole possession of eighth on Penn State's all-time list with 44 for her career.

The Nittany Lions earned three penalty corners in the second half, with the final attempt coming with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. Following the insert, Herold recorded a shot that was blocked. Gebhart found the loose ball and brought it in from the right side, putting a hard-hit ball in for a goal from about eight yards out. The score gave Penn State a 2-0 lead, which it wouldn't relinquish.

Penn State continues Big Ten action on the road, taking on Maryland in College Park, Md., at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10.
