ROCHESTER, N.Y.; Nov. 15, 2014 - Led by Caitlin Reilly's (Chanhassen, Minnesota) two-goal performance, including her gamewinner in overtime, the Penn State women's hockey team topped CHA foes RIT 3-2 on Saturday. The Nittany Lions earned the weekend split with the Tigers, improving their record to 6-5-3 overall and 1-2-1 in CHA play.
With time winding down in the opening frame, Penn State scored the game's first goal. Amy Petersen (Minnetonka, Minnesota) picked up a turnover from behind the RIT net and fed it to Reilly at the top of the slot, who tapped in the 1-0 score.
But the Tigers ( 6-5-3, 1-2-1 CHA) came back from the first intermission roaring, and netted a pair of goals 80 seconds apart within the first two minutes of the second period to take a 2-1 lead.
The conference battle saw seven penalties assessed in the second period by both teams and the trend continued early in the third period. RIT was called for tripping at 3:37 and 34 seconds later, was issued a checking penalty for the 56-second 5-on-3 Penn State player advantage. With half of a minute left in the 5-on-3, Bella Sutton (Shoreview, Minnesota) one-timed a rocket from the blueline that sailed in to the net top shelf, glove side to tie the game at 2-2.
The Nittany Lions opened the overtime period by putting two shots on goal and controlling the majority of play, which paid off just over three minutes into overtime. Petersen created a neutral zone turnover and chipped the puck to Laura Bowman (Minnetonka, Minnesota) at the blueline. Bowman then dished it to Reilly, driving the net, whose initial shot was saved by RIT's goaltender Ali Binnington. Reilly scooped up the rebound from behind the goal line and bounced the puck off of Binnington's back and in to the net for the 3-2 gamewinner.
Hannah Ehresmann's (Minnetonka, Minnesota) record improved to 3-1-3 after she made 26 saves in the win.
The Nittany Lions return to Pegula Ice Arena next weekend for a pair of CHA games against Lindenwood. The teams face off on Fri., Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. and Sat., Nov. 22 at 2 p.m.
