UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (AP) - Four Nittany Lions scored in double figures as Penn State men's basketball (2-0) powered to a 73-54 victory against Fordham (1-1) Sunday evening at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Senior D.J. Newbill scored 18 points, freshman Shep Garner added 12 on four 3-pointers. junior Brandon Taylor and senior John Johnson each scored 11 as the Nittany Lions sank 25 of 53 field-goal attempts and seven of 18 3-pointers.
The Lions held the Rams to 17-of-55 shooting, including just 8-of-26 3-pointers.
Garner's only shots were from 3-point range (4-of-8).
Nemanja Zarkovic scored 14 points for Fordham and Chris Sengfelder added 10.
The Nittany Lions won the rebounding battle (40-37) and held the Rams' Eric Paschall to just seven points. Paschall, who scored 31 against New York Institute of Technology Friday night, fouled out with 12:56 remaining. Senior Ross Travis had nine rebounds and eight points.
Tied up at 10-10 in the first half after some early back-and-forth action, senior John Johnson sparked a 6-0 run with a three-point play that lifted the Nittany Lions ahead by as many as six, 16-10. The Rams cut off the streak with a free throw, but Penn State surged ahead with eight more unanswered points capped off with a dunk by Newbill to stretch the advantage to double-digits, 24-11.
The Rams responded with a 4-1 strike to narrow the margin to nine, 25-16, but Penn State followed with a 5-0 stretch to secure a 14-point lead for the Nittany Lions, 30-16, with 4:10 remaining in the frame. Fordham broke up the streak with a three-pointer, 30-19, but Penn State closed out the half on an 8-2 run to enter the intermission with a 17-point lead, 38-21.
Senior Ross Travis came out of the break with six unanswered points to push Penn State ahead, 44-21. The Rams rebounded with back-to-back jumpers to trim the advantage to 19, 44-25, but the Nittany Lions followed with a 13-7 scoring streak to extend the lead to 25, 57-32, with 12:11 remaining in the game.
The Nittany Lions continued to dominate throughout the second half of the final frame, powering to a 73-54 win in the game without letting the lead dip below 18 for the remaining of the contest.
Next up, Penn State travels to Charleston, S.C. to compete in the Charleston Classic. The Nittany Lions open the event against Charlotte Thursday, Nov. 20 at 5 p.m. before squaring off against either South Carolina or Cornell. Thursday's matchup will broadcast live on ESPNU.
