Placekicker Sam Ficken (Valparaiso, Ind.) has been dubbed this week's Iron Workers Union No. 3 "Ironman of the Game" for his efforts in the Penn State-Maryland game last Saturday.
Ficken is the first Penn State placekicker since at least 1982 to have three field goals of 45 or more yards in a game (46,47,48). He connected on all four field goals in which three kicks were longer than 45 yards.
This year's co-captain has scored 68 points this season connecting on 17-of-19 kicks. With his efforts against the Terps, Ficken moved into a tie for third place on Penn State's Career field goals list (47). He is in sixth place on the Penn State career-scoring list with 239 points.
Ficken also earned his fourth career Big Ten Specialist of the Week. Lou Groza Place-Kicker Award honored him for the second time this season as one of the "Stars of the Week". Additionally, he was named Mid-season All-Big Ten by Phil Steele's College Football.
The senior was nominated for the National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Fellowship and is a CoSIDA Academic All-America candidate.
