Nov. 6, 2014 UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; Nov. 6, 2014 - Penn State men's lacrosse head coach Jeff Tambroni announced that Peter Toner has been promoted to the role of Associate Head Coach. Toner served as an assistant coach on Tambroni's staff for four seasons.
"Pete has been actively involved in every facet of our program since the fall of 2010," Tambroni said. "His work ethic and commitment to Penn State Lacrosse have been essential ingredients for our team's growth. He is a tireless recruiter and an extremely gifted defensive coordinator. Our program is fortunate to have him on our staff and his recent promotion is well-deserved."
As the team's defensive coordinator, Toner has led the Nittany Lions to significant success. In 2014, Penn State's scoring defense ranked second in the Colonial Athletic Association with 8.79 goals allowed per game.
Toner helped lead the Blue and White to its third-straight winning campaign after guiding the Nittany Lions to one of the most successful seasons in program history. The 2013 Nittany Lions set records for wins (12) and earned the program's first outright regular season conference title by posting a perfect 6-0 record in CAA play. They secured the program's third NCAA Tournament bid with a 10-game win streak at the end of the season.
Prior to Penn State, Toner spent three seasons as associate head coach at Bryant (2008-10), where he served as the team's defensive and recruiting coordinators. He helped guide the Bulldogs through their transition to Division I as the team went a combined 22-10 during its first two seasons at the nation's top level.
Before working at Bryant, Toner served as head coach of Wheaton College for the 2006 and 2007 seasons. During his first season, the Lyons enjoyed their best campaign in school history as they went 10-6 en route to a berth in the ECAC Division II championship game.
A 2003 graduate of Springfield College, Toner worked as a graduate assistant at his alma mater for two seasons (2004-05). As a player, he helped lead the Pride to three NCAA tournament appearances. A two-time captain, Toner garnered All-New England honors and was one of two intercollegiate men's lacrosse players to garner National Strength and Conditioning Association All-America recognition.
