MADISON, Wis. -- The Penn State men's hockey team played one of its most complete games of the season in a 5-2 victory over Wisconsin at the Kohl Center on Friday night. David Glen (Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta) and Dylan Richard (Sherwood Park, Alberta) scored in their returns to the ice, while James Robinson (Cochrane, Alberta) tallied his first collegiate goal.
"Dylan (Richard) and David (Glen) were big reasons to our success tonight," head coach Guy Gadowsky said. "It's not as important that they scored, but that they're good leaders. What they bring in terms of character is tremendous."
Sophomore David Goodwin (Des Peres, Mo.) notched four points on the night, a career-first as well as his first three-assist game. Junior Casey Bailey (Anchorage, Alaska) scored a goal and an assist to up his point streak to six games.
Penn State (8-4-2, 2-1-0-0 Big Ten) dominated the opening 15 minutes of the game, taking the first nine shots and eventually tallying on the goal after 11 minutes on the power play. Bailey took a shot from the left point that was knocked down by Goodwin, falling to Glen who put away his third of the year top shelf, popping the water bottle behind Joel Rumpel (35 saves).
Three minutes later, Robinson collected a loose puck in his own end, chipped it up along the boards and went in unopposed on Rumpel and sniped a wrister for his first collegiate goal and a 2-0 lead with 5:37 remaining in the period.
Despite that early domination, Wisconsin (1-9-1, 0-1-0-0 Big Ten) began to get its footing with some light pressure on Eamon McAdam's (Perkasie, Pa.) net with three quick shots. UW's Keegan Ford unloaded a slapshot from the blue line that Morgan Zulinick tipped in with 1:50 left in the frame to cut the lead in half. PSU held a 14-6 edge in shots in the opening 20 minutes.
The Nittany Lions would dominate the second period from the onset, applying pressure for the full 20 minutes. Penn State would double its lead as Goodwin swung a puck in front of net from the left boards that hit Bailey and fell to Richard, who put away his second goal of the year with 3:03 left in the frame. Penn State out-shot Wisconsin, 15-8.
Wisconsin's Cameron Hughes checked Tommy Olczyk (Long Grove, Ill.) 20 seconds into the third period to earn a five-minute major and a game misconduct setting up a Penn State power play.
Bailey lit the lamp for the 10th time this year on a wrister from the top of the slot to earn a three-goal lead as his shot slid through traffic and Rumpel's five-hole 2:31 into the period. Goodwin and Glen helped on the play.
Wisconsin began to build momentum and would cut the lead to a pair on a Tim Davison power-play goal with 11:35 remaining. Davison drove down from the left point and slotted one home over McAdam's glove for his second of the season.
The Badgers elected to pull Rumpel with 3:46 remaining for the extra attacker. Jake Linhart and Brad Navin were credited with assists.
Penn State would earn its first empty-net goal of the season as Goodwin collected a David Thompson (Glen Mills, Pa.) pass to score a 190-foot goal, his sixth of the year, with 40.9 seconds remaining as the Kohl Center emptied out.
McAdam picked up his third win of the season in four starts, making 22 saves. Penn State out-shot the Badgers, 40-24, for the game and went 2-for-5 on the power play. The Badgers were 1-for-2 with the man advantage.
GAME NOTES
• The Nittany Lions improved to 2-6-0 all-time against the Badgers. Both wins have come at the Kohl Center. The three-goal margin is the largest for PSU in the series.
• The first three goals of the night were scored by Albertans David Glen, Dylan Richard and James Robinson.
• Penn State won its eighth game of the season. The Nittany Lions won eight in all of 2013-14.
• Casey Bailey tallied his team-leading sixth multi-point game of the season, while Goodwin notched his third.
• Casey Bailey is riding a six-game point streak dating back to Nov. 14 at UMass Lowell. During that span he has six goals, four assists and 10 points.
• David Goodwin, Dylan Richard and Casey Bailey were paired together on the top line for the first time this season. The trio combined to score three goals and four assists for seven points and a plus-six rating.
• Five different Nittany Lions tallied goals. The last time five or more Nittany Lions scored in a game was when six pulled the feat in a 7-1 win over Holy Cross (Oct. 26, 2014). Last time five goals were scored by five different players was Nov. 11, 2013 in a 5-4 win over Robert Morris.
