Penn State and Virginia Tech Announce Football Series Date Changes

Jan. 13, 2015

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - The first gridiron meeting between Penn State and Virginia Tech has been moved to 2020, two years earlier than originally scheduled.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Blacksburg on Sept. 12, 2020 and the Hokies will visit State College on Sept. 6, 2025. The games were originally scheduled for Sept. 17, 2022 at Lane Stadium and Sept. 16, 2023 in Beaver Stadium and had been announced in 2013.

Despite having campuses located less than 400 miles apart, Penn State and Virginia Tech have never met on the football field. The Nittany Lions have played Virginia (5-3), VMI (1-0) and William & Mary (4-0) from The Old Dominion, earning a cumulative 10-3 on-field record.

Virginia Tech is among several regional opponents on Penn State's upcoming schedules. The Nittany Lions will play nine Big Ten Conference games annually starting in 2016 and have three non-conference contests every year starting in 2016.

Penn State will host Army on October 3, 2015, as Coach James Franklin's Nittany Lions and the Black Knights meet first time since 1979. Long-time rivals Penn State and Pitt will meet every season from 2016-19 in their first contests since 2000. The Nittany Lions will play in Pittsburgh in 2016 and 2018 and the Panthers will visit Beaver Stadium in 2017 and 2019.

Penn State also will renew its rivalry with West Virginia, hosting the Mountaineers in 2023 and traveling to Morgantown in 2024. The Nittany Lions also are scheduled to play Temple the next two seasons, opening the 2015 season on Sept. 5 against the Owls at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Penn State's football schedules from 2015-18 are posted on GoPSUsports.com: http://bit.ly/1lzqlzB.

The Nittany Lions capped the 2014 season with a 31-30 overtime win over Boston College in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. Penn State and Wisconsin are the only Big Ten teams to earn at least 10 consecutive on-field winning seasons. Franklin is among just three Penn State head coaches to win at least seven games in his first season in Happy Valley.

Penn State returns 15 starters (7 offense, 7 defense, 1 specialist), and 14 additional players who have started, for the 2015 season. The Blue-White Game is April 18 in Beaver Stadium and the season opener is Sept. 5 at Temple.

Penn State season ticket renewals are underway for the 2015 campaign. The Nittany Lion Club donation and season ticket payment deadline is February 1 for participation in the Beaver Stadium Virtual VenueTM Seat Selection. There will not be any increase in the price of Penn State football season tickets or Nittany Lion Club donation levels for next season.
