UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (AP) - Despite 37 points from D.J. Newbill, Purdue slipped past Penn State for an 84-77 overtime victory Saturday afternoon at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Newbill's effort stands as the eighth-most points in a Penn State game all-time and is the most since 1965. Purdue's Kendall Stephens scored 22 points, including a game-tying 3-pointer that sent the game to overtime.

The Boilermakers (11-7, 3-2 Big Ten) trailed throughout the second half, save for one tie, but Stephens' shot from the left corner knotted the score before Purdue outscored Penn State (12-6, 0-5) 17-10 in overtime.

In overtime, Hammons drained a 6-footer and Octeus and Hammons each converted a pair of free throws to give the Boilermakers a 73-67 lead. In the interim, Penn State's Donovon Jack and Jordan Dickerson fouled out and Newbill missed a pair of short, open looks.

Edwards' two free throws gave Purdue an eight-point lead before Newbill scored Penn State's first points of the overtime period at the 2:08 mark.

Purdue was 18 of 29 from the free-throw line overall but sank 11 of 13 in overtime.

Stephens missed a fallaway jumper and Octeus was forced to foul Penn State's Newbill who gave Penn State a 67-64 lead with 12.4 seconds to play in regulation.

Penn State opted to foul instead of allowing Purdue a game-tying 3-point attempt. Octeus missed both free throws but Stephens pulled down a rebound, stepped into 3-point range and tied the game at 67 with 5.7 seconds left.

Penn State called its final timeout and Newbill was breaking toward the basket when he stumbled and got off an off-balance shot that bounced harmlessly off the glass to create overtime.

The Boilermakers quickly erased their 34-25 halftime deficit when Isaac Haas opened with a three-point play, Stephens hit a 3-point basket and Rapheal Davis drove the baseline for a layup to complete an 8-0 run before Geno Thorpe knocked down a 3-pointer.

Another Stephens 3 gave Purdue a 40-39 lead but Jack's slam off a Newbill assist was followed by 3-pointers by Shep Garner and Payton Banks to give Penn State a 48-40 lead.

Newbill's two free throws gave Penn State a 61-56 advantage but Hammons sank two foul shots, Vince Edwards made a layup and Hammons tied it at 61 with a free throw.

Next up, Penn State heads to Michigan State for a midweek matchup against the Spartans Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. on BTN.
