UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Penn State women's tennis team fell to William & Mary 5-2, concluding a busy weekend of tennis. Devan McCluskey (Phoenix, Ariz.) defeated Olivia Thaler in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Dasha Sapogova (Belarus, Minsk) lost 6-3, 6-3 to Jeltje Loomans.
Taylor Shukow (Boca Raton, Fla.), making her first singles appearance of the spring season, battled in three hard sets and defeated Cecily Wuenscher 6-2, 4-6, 1-0(6). Victoria Kisialeva (Toronto, Canada) fell to Leeza Nemchinov 6-3, 6-2. Katia Blik (Moscow, Russia) took Melanie Roy to three sets before falling 2-6, 6-1, 1-6.
McCluskey and Kim Surin (Montreal, Canada) continued the amazing doubles play as the duo defeated Melanie Roy and Julia Casselbury 6-2. The doubles team improved their record to 6-1, including a four-match win streak. Kisialeva and Dasha Sapogova (Belarus, Minsk) were defeated 6-1 by Jeitje Loomans and Leeza Nemchinov. Katherine Whiteaway (Sawbridgeworth, England) and Jackie Zuhse (Boca Raton, Fla.) fell to Olivia Thaler and Maria Groener 6-3.
"The doubles point was big today as it will be all year. Our team is fighting, but just not quite getting over the hump yet," said head coach Chris Cagle. "Coach Fenwick and I know that the results will come. Right now is a time to stay the course and keep working daily to get better."
Looking forward, the Nittany Lions are back in action Saturday, January 31 when they battle the No. 44 Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington, Ky. The Nittany Lions open their home schedule February 4 when Pittsburgh comes to visit.
