UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; Jan. 3, 2015 - The Penn State women's hockey team sliced a two-goal third period Ohio State lead in half, but were unable to complete the comeback and fell to the Buckeyes, 3-1, on Saturday.

After 40 minutes of scoreless play, the offense broke open in the third period. At 3:24, Ohio State's (11-8-2, 7-7-2-1 WCHA) Taylor Kuehl sent a pass to Haley Studler from the corner who pushed it past Celine Whitlinger (Garden Grove, California) for the game's first score.

Studler added her second of the game four minutes later. She tapped it in from the top of the crease to double the Buckeyes' advantage at 2-0.

But with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation, the Nittany Lions (10-8-3, 5-4-1 CHA) cut Ohio State's lead in half. Caitlin Reilly (Chanhassen, Minnesota) chipped the puck past a Buckeye defender and from beside the Ohio State net, passed it to Hannah Hoenshell (Plano, Texas). Hoenshell backhanded the puck to Hannah Bramm (Tampa, Florida) stationed in front of Stacy Danczak's net, knocking in her fourth of the year for the 2-1 count.

The tally marked Penn State's first over Ohio State in program history.

But with 1:50 to go in the game, Sarah Nielsen (Edina, Minnesota) was called for tripping and with Whitlinger pulled to put the Blue and White at even strength, the Buckeyes tacked on an empty netter with 21 seconds left for the final 3-1 score.

Whitlinger (6-5-0) finished the game with 32 saves, stopping 27 shots in the first two frames.

The teams rematch on Sun., Jan. 4 at 2 p.m. All Penn State faculty and staff receive two complimentary tickets to the game.
