UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; Jan. 4, 2015 - The Penn State women's hockey team nearly tripled its shot total from its opening game of the series against Ohio State, but suffered a 6-0 non-conference loss to the Buckeyes in Pegula Ice Arena on Sunday.
The Nittany Lions (10-9-3, 5-4-1 CHA) came out in the first period with a strong forecheck, holding the Buckeyes to a 12-9 shot advantage. But with just under two minutes left in the stanza, Dani Sadek's first of the year put Ohio State (12-8-2, 7-7-2-1 WCHA) on the board.
The Buckeyes solidified its lead in the second period. Julia McKinnon and Julianna Iafallo scored 33 seconds apart to put Ohio State up 3-0. Danielle Gagne netted the third goal of the frame with 2:43 left in the second for the 4-0 count.
Penn State produced a stronger defensive effort in the third, tying the Buckeyes in the shot column, 7-7. But Ohio State perpetuated its trend of quick back-to-back strikes, cashing in on the power play at 5:24 and adding a sixth goal 1:17 later for the final 6-0 score.
Shannon Yoxheimer (Jackson, Michigan) led the Nittany Lions offensively, putting six shots on net to help the Blue and White to its 23 shots. In the first game of the weekend against the Buckeyes, Penn State tallied just nine shots.
Hannah Ehresmann (Minnetonka, Minnesota) turned away 27 shots as her record fell to 4-4-3.
Penn State returns to action on Jan. 17 and 18 with a home College Hockey America (CHA) series against RIT. Saturday's game starts at noon and the teams rematch on Sunday at 2 p.m.
