CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The No. 2 Penn State men's gymnastics team fell to No. 3 Illinois Saturday, 441.300-434.500. The Nittany Lions ran into a Fighting Illini team that had a career day. Illinois posted 12 career-highs, three season team-highs, a team record score in the pommel horse and the top overall score in the school history.
The Nittany Lions and Fighting Illini split 3-3 in the team events. Individually, Illinois won three events, Penn State won two events and the schools tied for first on the high bar.
Penn State opened up the competition on the pommel horse. Alexis Torres (Catano, Puerto Rico) and Leroy Clarke, Jr. (Maplewood, N.J.) led the way for Penn State on the pommel horse. Torres tied for fourth with his score of 14.450 and Clarke took sixth with his score of 14.300.
In the floor exercise, Thad Lawson (Chesapeake, Va.) won his second floor exercise title of the year with his career-best score of 15.350. Also in the floor exercise, Dominic DiFulvio (Marietta, N.Y.) and Trevor Howard (Columbus, Ohio) tied for third with their scores of 15.050.
Torres led the way for Penn State on the vault. He finished second with his score of 14.950. Howard tied for third with his score of 14.800 and Matthew Felleman (Medway, Mass.) posted a score of 14.750 to finish fifth.
The Nittany Lions secured the top two spots in the still rings event. Torres finished first with his score of 15.700 followed by Howard in second (15.650). Clarke posted a score of 15.100 in the vault to finish fourth.
Illinois found their stride in the parallel bars and the high bar. Illinois had five gymnasts finish in the top six spots in the parallel bars and Illinois took four out of the top five spots in the high bar competition. In the parallel bars, Howard finished third (15.000) and in the high bar, Felleman tied for first with his score of 15.000.
Howard also competed in the all-around for Penn State and he posted a score of 87.450.
In the record books, Penn State tallied the No. 6 all-time scores in the floor exercise and the still rings.
Next up on the schedule for Penn State is the Winter Cup in Las Vegas, Nev. The Winter Cup takes place at the Riviera Hotel February 19 and 21.
