WENTZVILLE, Mo.; Feb. 6, 2015 - Laura Bowman (Minnetonka, Minn.) had a hand in all of Penn State's goals and propelled the Nittany Lions to a 3-2 College Hockey America (CHA) win over Lindenwood on Friday.
Bowman scored a pair of goals and added an assist for her ninth multi-point game of the season. Micayla Catanzariti (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) opened scoring with her second marker of the year.
After a scoreless first period, smart positioning to begin the second helped put the Blue and White (15-10-4, 9-4-2 CHA) on the board. Forty-four seconds into the frame, Kelly Seward (Williamsville, N.Y.) picked up a turnover at the Penn State blue line and fed it to Bowman in Lindenwood's zone. From the nearside boards, she sent a quick pass to Catanzariti in the high slot, whose wrister gave the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead.
Just under 11 minutes later, Penn State went on its second power play of the night and made the most of the player advantage. After being fed the puck from behind Lindenwood's (8-17-1, 5-9-1 CHA) net, Seward passed it along the blue line to Bella Sutton (Shoreview, Minn.). Sutton sent a hard shot to Bowman in the crease that she was able to tip in, putting Penn State up, 2-0.
The Nittany Lions continued to forecheck as the clock wound down and with almost two-and-a-half minutes remaining in the period, the hard work paid off. Jeanette Bateman (Greeley, Colo.) sent a long pass from the Penn State zone to Amy Petersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) along the boards. The sophomore weaved through traffic and sent the puck sailing to Nicole Hensley's net. Bowman collected the rebound and threw it on goal, which deflected in for the 3-0 score.
Lindenwood would cut Penn State's lead to one with goals at 19:49 of the second period and 14:23 of the third, but the Nittany Lions held on to extend their unbeaten streak to four games.
Celine Whitlinger (Garden Grove, Calif.) stopped 29 shots in her 11th win of the season.
The teams rematch in Lindenwood Ice Arena on Sat., Feb.7 at 4 p.m. (ET).
