WENTZVILLE, Mo.; Feb. 7, 2015 - The Penn State women's hockey team couldn't rebound from a staunch Lindenwood attack and fell to the Lions, 4-2, in College Hockey America (CHA) play on Saturday.
Shannon Yoxheimer (Jackson, Mich.), playing in her 100th career game, and Laura Bowman (Minnetonka, Minn.) scored Penn State's (15-11-4, 9-5-2 CHA) goals.
Lindenwood (9-17-1, 6-9-1 CHA) was quick to respond after dropping the weekend opener to the Nittany Lions on Friday. Goals by Jordyn Constance and Lyndsay Kirkham put Penn State down 2-0 just 3:07 into regulation.
Despite the margin, the Nittany Lions were intent on clawing their way back and outshot the Lions, 19-14, until their fight paid off as time wound down in the second stanza. After Sarah Nielsen (Edina, Minn.) blocked a shot, Yoxheimer's 10th goal of the season went in, thanks to assists from Emily Laurenzi (Townsend, Del.) and Remi Martin (Littleton, Colo.) to cut Lindenwood's lead to 2-1 with 2:03 remaining in the period.
Penn State didn't relinquish its momentum coming out of the second intermission. Bowman tallied the equalizer just 28 seconds into the final frame, helped by her linemates, Amy Petersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Micayla Catanzariti (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) to tie the score at 2-2. The goal was Bowman's fourth in three games.
But the Lions would add a goal at 5:21 and an empty netter with 31 seconds remaining in regulation for the final 4-2 win.
Celine Whitlinger (Garden Grove, Calif.) fanned 27 shots as her record moved to 11-6-1. The Nittany Lions posted 26 shots, led by Bowman's five, and went 0-for-1 on the power play.
Penn State visits the CHA-leading Mercyhurst Lakers for a Valentine's Day weekend series. The teams face off on Fri., Feb. 13 at 3 p.m. and Sat., Feb. 14 at 2 p.m.
