SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Penn State softball team fell in both games of its Capital Classic doubleheader Thursday, 4-1 to Grand Canyon and then 6-1 to host Sacramento State.
The Lions kept things close in their second game with the Hornets as starter Marissa Diescher (Livingston Manner, N.Y.) held the Sac State offense to just one run through the first four.
Penn State then tied it up off of an RBI double by catcher Alyssa VanDerveer (Hillsborough, N.J.) in the top of the fifth before the home standing Hornets regained the lead in their half of the inning.
Sacramento State then plated four in the bottom of the sixth to put the contest away for the five run victory.
In the game between PSU and Grand Canyon earlier in the day, the Lopes got out to a quick 3-0 lead after four hits, one of which was a two-run homer to right field during the second inning.
After Sac State tacked on another run in fifth, the Nittany Lions got on the scoreboard in the sixth, when pinch runner Mary Ward (Greencastle, Pa.) came home following a wild pitch with the bases loaded.
GCU pitching held the Penn State offense at bay following that first Blue and White run and took the contest by that three-run score.
PSU continues its games at the Capital Classic with a solo contest against Loyola Marymount, Friday at 1:30 p.m. Eastern.
