MINNEAPOLIS - In the final regular season meet of the season, the No. 12 Penn State women's gymnastics team continued to perform at a high level, posting a 196.650 to finish second in the B1G Five Meet at the Sports Pavilion on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
The Nittany Lions tied the third highest score of the season at 196.650, equaling the mark from their final home meet vs. Brockport, Iowa State and Penn, and finished behind No. 6 Michigan's score of 197.000. No. 20 Minnesota (196.450) finished third, No. 25 Iowa (196.425) finished fourth and Rutgers (194.150) rounded out the five team meet.
"We did great today and posted an unbelievable road score," said head coach Jeff Thompson. "We were able to get out to a great start on the vault and uneven bars and had a good showing on balance beam. Heading into the final rotation, after our bye, we were in the lead, but Michigan had a great showing on vault and the scoring on floor had been tight all night, so we knew we had our work cut out for us.
"After kicking the low bar and scrapping the top of her foot on the uneven bars, Sidney [Sanabria-Robles] fought through the injury tonight for our team and had a good all-around showing. We hit 24 for 24 routines, took the Big Ten regular season champions to the wire and we are looking forward to building on this heading into next week's Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor."
Freshman Briannah Tsang (Vancouver, British Columbia) was the top all-around finisher for Penn State with a 39.300 score to finish third in the competition and posted the highest all-around score by a Big Ten freshman during the final week of the regular season. She opened the meet with her third highest score of the season on the vault at 9.900 to finish tied for fifth overall. A 9.775 on the uneven bars and a 9.800 on the balance beam followed, finishing tied for 23rd and tied for 11th, respectively. Tsang then closed the meet by finishing seventh overall on the floor exercise at 9.825.
In just her fourth career meet, freshman Chanen Raygoza (Upland, Calif.) came through with the best uneven bars performance of her career to finish fourth overall on the apparatus. Raygoza scored 9.900, receiving scores of 9.850 and 9.950 from the two judges, to tie for the second highest score on the event this season. She has now set a career-high in two straight meets after scoring 9.850 at West Virginia last weekend.
Senior Sidney Sanabria-Robles (Caguas, Puerto Rico) finished tied for fourth in the all-around with Iowa's Angel Metcalf at 39.275. She finished among the top-15 on three of the four events, including a tie for third on the balance beam at 9.875. That performance came after injuring her foot on the uneven bars, an event she finished tied for 16th on at 9.800. Her 9.850 on the vault and 9.750 on the floor exercise each finished tied for 14th overall.
Penn State opened the meet with a 49.375 on the vault, led by a pair of 9.900 performances from sophomore Emma Sibson (Allen, Texas) and Tsang, which finished tied for fifth overall. Senior Krystal Welsh (Bowie, Md.) gave Penn State three of the top-10 finishers on the event with her 9.875 to tie for ninth. In the first rotation, Iowa was on the bye, Michigan posted a 49.125 on the uneven bars, Minnesota scored 49.125 on the balance beam and Rutgers logged a 47.825 on the floor exercise.
In the second rotation, the Lions put up a 49.175 on the uneven bars to register the third highest score of the season on the apparatus. Iowa went 48.750 on the floor exercise, Michigan accumulated a 49.200 on the balance beam, Minnesota was on the bye and Rutgers gathered a 48.800 on the vault during the second rotation.
Penn State's 49.100 balance beam in the third rotation was led by Sanabria-Robles' 9.875 to finish tied for third overall on the apparatus. Sophomore Nicole Medvitz (Paramus, N.J.) scored 9.825 on the event to tie for ninth, while Tsang, Welsh and sophomore Christina Postiglione (Selden, N.Y.) all recorded a score of 9.800 to tie for 11th.
