GREENSBORO, N.C. - Senior Carolyn Fittin (Sea Girt, N.J.) led Penn State with a ninth-place finish in school-record time in the 50 freestyle, while the 200 free relay team broke its own school record to place 12th on the first day of competition at the NCAA Women's Swimming Championships Thursday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. As a team, the Nittany Lions rank in a tie for 19th with Minnesota with 19 points.

Fittin set a new school standard in the preliminaries, touching in 21.98 seconds, but was just a hundredth of a second shy of reaching the 'A' final. She delivered in the 'B' final though, winning in 22.07 seconds to place ninth overall.

Fittin was also a part of the 200 free relay effort, which nearly broke its standard of 1:28.50 in the prelims, placing 12th in 1:28.59, and then remained fifth in a record-setting 1:28.30. Alyson Ackman (Montreal, Quebec) led the effort off, and was followed by Fittin, Katie Saloky (Bloomsburg, Pa.) and Katelyn Miller (Hershey, Pa.), in order. Those times represent the three fastest in school history.

Additionally, Penn State competed in the 500 free, 200 individual medley and 400 IM relay, but did not advance any swimmers to the finals.

Casey Francis (East Meadow, N.Y.) and Megan Siverling (Chester Springs, Pa.) competed in the 500 free with Francis placing 41st in 4:45.96 and Siverling placing 44th in 4:46.25. Katie Rowe was 45th in the 200 IM in 1:59.30. The 400 IM relay team of Ackman, Melissa Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico), Fittin and Kaitlin Jones (Midlothian, Va.) touched in 3:35.71 to place 27th.

Competition in the three day event will continue Friday.
