ROSEMONT, Ill. - Penn State rookie RHP Sal Biasi (Wilkes Barre, Pa.) struck out nine consecutive batters over two appearances, earning Big Ten Baseball Co-Freshman of the Week honors for the week of Mar. 16-23, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Biasi made his first appearance of the week in the Nittany Lions' home opener Wednesday against Canisius, striking out the side in one inning of work. He then entered the first game against No. 21 Indiana Sunday in the eighth inning with a runner on third base, two outs and a tie score. He struck out that batter and the next five he faced, ultimately pitching through the 11th inning and not yielding a run. For the week he posted a line of 4 1/3 innings pitched, one hit, no runs allowed, three walks and nine strikeouts.

Biasi is off to a strong start in his young career, posting the best ERA on the team amongst relievers with at least 10 innings pitched at 2.51 in 14 1/3 innings. He also has 15 strikeouts, good for a three-way tie for second on the team behind starter RHP Nick Hedge (Winnetka, Ill.), who has 16 strikeouts.

Biasi shared B1G Freshman of the Week honors with Milo Freeman of Rutgers, who batted .571 (8-for-14) for the week in helping the Scarlet Knights to their first conference series win over Purdue.

It's the first individual honor for Penn State baseball this season and the conference freshman of the week honor since shortstop Jim Haley (Upper Darby, Pa.) was recognized April 8, 2014.

Penn State continues its homestand Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. against Villanova.
