UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's golf team was awarded the Milt Morgan, Jr. Highest Team GPA Award for all sports Monday night at the 28th Annual SAAB Academic Achievement Awards Banquet, marking the third time in history the program claimed this honor. It is also the first time a men's team won the overall GPA award since 2001, when head coach Greg Nye's team earned it for the then-second time.
The team's excellent GPA average also earned the Varsity 'S' award, presented to the men's and women's teams with the highest GPAs. It was the field hockey squad that was presented with the Varsity 'S' award on the women's side.
A total of 370 awards and 292 were presented to Nittany Lion student-athletes Monday night at the banquet, the second-highest total all-time. Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour and Russ Mushinsky, Director of the Morgan Center, were among the speakers. SAAB President Tori Waldner (women's basketball; Milton, Ga.) and SAAB Banquet chair Ellen Ceresko (women's golf; Jefferson Township) also spoke and presented awards.
