Nittany Lions Open Up Penn Relays with Heptathlon

PHILADELPHIA -- The Penn State track & field team opened up the 2015 Penn Relays with Tal Ben-Artzi (Kibbutz Gazit, Israel) and Natalie Shiffler (Irwin, Pa.) competing in the women's heptathlon Tuesday and Wednesday. Ben-Artzi finished sixth with a score of 4,531 points, followed by Shiffler in seventh (4,300 points).

Tuesday's action featured the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and the 200-meter dash.

In the opening event, the 100-meter hurdles, Ben-Artzi clocked in at 15.68, while Shiffler posted a time of 16.04. In the high jump, Ben-Artzi cleared a height of 5-5.75 and Shiffler recorded a height of 5-4.5.

Ben-Artzi rounded out the top-five finishers in the shot put with her toss of 33-6. Also in the shot put, Shiffler posted a mark of 31-2.

The duo finished out Tuesday with times of 27.14 (Ben-Artzi) and 28.59 (Shiffler) in the 200-meter dash.

Wednesday's slate featured the long jump, javelin throw and the competition ended with the 800-meter run.

On Wednesday, Ben-Artzi posted a distance of 17-1.5 in the long jump, tallied a mark of 94-6 in the javelin throw and closed out the competition with a time of 2:34.13 in the 800-meter run.

Shiffler recorded a leap of 15-6.75 in the long jump, claimed the top mark in the javelin throw (140-8) and clocked in at 2:45.35 in the 800-meter run.

The Nittany Lions return to action tomorrow at the Penn Relays starting at 9 a.m. with the women's discus throw.
